Hand-Release Push-Ups: Form, Benefits and Programming

Reset every repetition on the floor to build strength from a dead stop and make depth unmistakable.

Short answer: Lower your body to the floor under control, briefly lift both hands while keeping your body braced, replace them in the same position and press up as one unit. Do not relax your trunk or snake your chest off the floor.

The hand-release push-up removes momentum between repetitions. Because the chest reaches the floor and the hands visibly leave it, every rep begins from a clear standard. That makes the variation useful for strength, honest rep counting and preparation for tests that use a hand-release rule.

Step-by-step technique

  1. Begin in a strong high plank.
  2. Lower until your chest and thighs contact the floor together.
  3. Lift both palms a few centimetres without pulling the elbows high.
  4. Return the hands beneath or just outside the shoulders.
  5. Brace, then press the chest and hips away from the floor at the same time.

Why the hand release changes the exercise

The pause removes the elastic rebound that can help a quick standard rep. You must create force from the bottom, where leverage is challenging. It also exposes a common weakness: if the chest rises before the hips, trunk tension or pressing strength is insufficient for that set.

GoalPrescription
Technique4 sets of 4–6, perfect resets
Strength endurance3–5 sets of 8–15, 90 sec rest
Test practiceShort cadence sets plus one controlled test set

Keep most sets below failure. If your body starts peeling off the floor, switch to an incline push-up or end the set.

Hand release versus standard reps

Standard push-ups are better for continuous rhythm and often allow more repetitions. Hand-release reps provide a consistent bottom position and demand force from rest. Neither is universally better; choose the version that matches your goal. For formal cadence work, see the FitnessGram push-up test guide.

Frequently asked

Are hand-release push-ups harder?

They often feel harder because the pause removes rebound and requires force from the bottom position.

Should you lift your chest too?

No. Briefly lift the hands while the body stays in contact with the floor, then brace before pressing.
