Shoulder-Tap Push-Ups: Form, Core Control and Progressions

Complete a push-up, remove one hand briefly and resist the urge to rotate.

Short answer: Perform one strict push-up, widen the feet and tap the opposite shoulder with one hand. Replace it, then alternate. Keep hips as level as practical and move slowly.

Correct form

Brace before lifting the hand and shift only enough weight to stay stable. Tap lightly rather than holding a long one-arm plank.

Muscles worked

The press uses chest, triceps and shoulders. During the tap, obliques, glutes and the supporting shoulder resist rotation.

Regressions

Use an incline, tap from the knees or practice high-plank taps without a push-up. Compare the rotational T push-up.

Mistakes

Feet too narrow, rushing, hips twisting and collapsing into the supporting shoulder are common. Widen the base before adding speed.

Tap, reset, keep the battle moving

RepSaga makes the completed push-up the attack while you keep the tap deliberate and controlled.

They challenge the trunk to resist rotation, especially when performed slowly.

Should my feet be together?
