Short answer: Push-ups do not train the biceps directly enough to be considered a main biceps exercise. The chest, triceps and front shoulders perform most of the pressing work. Rows, chin-ups and curls provide more direct biceps loading.
Because the biceps cross the elbow and shoulder, they are active to some degree during many upper-body movements. Activity does not automatically mean a muscle is receiving the main growth stimulus.
What happens during a push-up
The triceps extend the elbow as you press away from the floor. The chest and anterior deltoids move the upper arm. The biceps can help stabilize the shoulder and elbow but do not drive the main upward action.
Can a variation target biceps?
Reverse-grip push-ups may change sensation and joint position, but they still remain presses. The reverse-grip guide explains why feeling a muscle is not the same as loading it optimally.
Exercises that train biceps directly
Use chin-ups, underhand rows, dumbbell or band curls and other elbow-flexion movements. Progress resistance and range just as you would for pressing work.
Build a balanced upper body
Pair push-ups with pulling volume. The muscles-worked guide details the main push-up contributors, while a row variation balances the horizontal press.
Use push-ups for pressing strength, then add 3–4 sets of a row or curl movement if direct biceps development is a goal.
Track push-ups honestly—and train the rest too
RepSaga makes pressing sessions fun, but it does not pretend push-ups replace the pulling work needed for balanced arms.
Frequently asked
Will push-ups make my biceps bigger?
They are unlikely to provide enough direct biceps loading by themselves.
Which push-up is best for biceps?
No push-up is primarily a biceps exercise. Use rows, chin-ups or curls for direct training.
