A Simple Push-Up Workout for Beginners

Three short weekly sessions that build technique, strength and confidence without demanding endless reps.

Beginner plan: train push-ups three non-consecutive days per week. Perform 3–4 sets of a variation you can do for 6–12 clean reps, resting 60–120 seconds between sets.

The best beginner workout meets you at your current level. A wall, kitchen counter or stable bench can make the movement easier while preserving the same core technique you will use on the floor.

Choose the right variation

Pick a version you can complete for at least six clean reps but no more than about fifteen. Wall push-ups are the easiest starting point, followed by high incline, low incline, knee and standard push-ups. If your form changes before rep six, make the angle easier.

The three-day schedule

DayMain workFocus
Monday3 × 6–10 push-upsSlow, consistent form
Wednesday4 × 5–8 push-upsMore total sets
Friday3 × 6–10 plus plankTechnique and core control

Warm up with shoulder circles, wrist rocks and one easy set. Finish each working set with roughly two good repetitions still available. This prevents one hard set from ruining the rest of the session.

How to progress for four weeks

  • Week 1: learn the movement and record your completed reps.
  • Week 2: add one rep to one or two sets.
  • Week 3: add a fourth set to Monday if recovery is good.
  • Week 4: reduce volume early in the week, then test a clean maximum set.

Turn each set into a mission

What if you cannot do a floor push-up?

That is normal. Use the wall-to-floor push-up progression. Lower the height of your incline gradually as you become stronger. A controlled incline rep is better training than a collapsed floor rep.

Frequently asked

How long should a beginner workout take?

About 15–25 minutes including warm-up and rests. More time is not automatically better.

Should beginners do push-ups daily?

Three focused sessions usually provide enough practice while leaving recovery time. Read how many push-ups to do per day for goal-specific guidance.
